Yuka Umino
Born in Aichi Prefecture in 1989, Yuka Umino graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at Kyoto Saga University of Arts in 2012. Umino currently resides in Kyoto, where she continues her creative activities. The artist has received multiple awards, including the "64th Kansai Shinseisaku Exhibition" New Artist Award and the "Young Creators Award 2018" MI Gallery Award & Holbein Award. Recent solo exhibitions have taken place at Sojiro Contemporary Art Gallery in Hyōgo, Japan in 2019, 2017, and 2015. She has also participated in various group exhibitions.
Umino's burgeoning fluid brush strokes and vibrant colors characterize her work. The artist depicts bodies with ambiguous boundaries, exploring the very existence of human beings. She believes that paintings provide us with a way to perceive the world beautifully. We are all born with a body, deprived of the right to choose our gender and environment. However, our personality and sensations are modifiable while inhabiting a given body. Umino sees our personality and sensations as a means of being reborn, while retaining our physical form and the hope of choosing our own existence.
